The first recorded mention of Kladno comes from the middle of the 14th century when it was a village owned by the Kladensky family. Centuries later it was bought by the Benedictine monks from the Brevnov monastery, who were its owners until 1848.  More

Dominik Hasek Images from around the world dominate today's Czech dailies: from pictures of Muslim women protesting the ban on religious headscarves in France, to the crash of a plane that killed 40 in the United Arab Emirates. On the domestic scene the dailies focus on several top stories, including the continuing split in the governing coalition over raising regulated rents and star goaltender Dominik Hasek's announcement that due to injury he'll be out for the rest of the NHL hockey season; that in a year Mr Hasek had widely been expected to make a come-back in his sport. Martina Navratilova, photo: CTK Martina Navratilova's last ever match at tennis's Australian Open ended in defeat in the mixed doubles final on Sunday. Another Czech sporting great, ice hockey forward Jaromir Jagr, played his 1,000th NHL game on Friday, though the game could have gone better for the famous no. 68. In football, Jiri Stajner has joined Sparta Prague on loan from Hanover, while other Czech players had mixed fortunes as the Bundesliga started again.  More

Tomas Rosicky, meanwhile, is staying at Dortmund, at least until the end of the season. Czech international coach Karel Brueckner has come second in a poll of the world's best managers in 2003. Ice hockey star Jaromir Jagr has been having mixed fortunes at his new club New York Rangers, and is it the end of the line for another Czech legend, Dominik Hasek?  More

Jaromir Jagr, photo: CTK The Czech ice hockey megastar Jaromir Jagr has left Washington for the New York Rangers. However, Jagr's first game for Rangers saw them being thrashed in a game the player described as a "kick in the behind". Jiri Novak bowed out in the third round of tennis's Australian Open, despite having led 2:0 on sets against Pavel of Romania. Katerina Holubcova has come second in a Biathlon World Cup event while Ales Valenta has won the second World Cup event of his career in freestyle aerial skiing.  More

In football, a record crowd at Banik Ostrava saw the league leaders go six points clear of nearest rivals Sparta, who lost to bogey team Zlin, and Czech internationals have been in the news around Europe. Czech ice hockey league leaders Pardubice won their first game after five outings, and legendary goaltender Dominik Hasek is going through a difficult period at the moment.  More
