PanoramaPribram drop zone - one of the country's main centres for tandem parachuting
South of Prague near the town of Pribram is a decommissioned military
airstrip just off the highway. Before you see any sign of the airport you
see the sky above filled with parachutes gently falling towards the earth.
Welcome to the Pribram drop zone. The man in command of this place is
checking a flight manifest - or passenger list - and scanning the skies

Current AffairsMan-powered medieval crane at Prague Castle
The exhibition "Charles IV, Emperor by the Grace of God" held at
Prague Castle earlier in the year has been described as one of the most
important cultural events of the decade. The most valuable art works of
Czech origin scattered among collectors in Europe and the United States
were successfully assembled for a reconstruction of life under the
Luxembourgs. The exhibition has had numerous accompanying events; one of
the most interesting is the creation of a perfect replica of a medieval
crane which now stands in the Castle's north courtyard. The crane is fully
functional and was made according to illustrations from the Wenceslas Bible
dating to the late 14th century. This week visitors could see the crane in
action and DL went along to admire it. She spoke with Ondrej Protiva, a
carpenter who helped to create it and manned it for the benefit of the
crowd:

PanoramaUnleashing the (Czech) Puppetmaster Within
Puppet theatre has been an integral part of Czech culture for centuries,
and few tourists leave Prague without taking in a performance of Don
Giovanni or the Marriage of Figaro, or at least bringing home a
marionette, be it a devil or angel, king or court jester. Children here
grow up on characters like Spejbl and Hurvinek; the Academy of Performing
Arts (DAMU) even offers a masters degree in "alternative and puppet
theatre direction." So little wonder that enthusiasts from around the
world journey to Prague to take workshops under master Czech puppet-makers
like
Miroslav Trejtnar. We caught up with Mirek and some of his students this
week. More

Current AffairsA series of Czech mountaineering tragedies points to dangers
Mountain-climbing is an extremely popular sport in the Czech Republic, but
it brings plenty of dangers, as a number of gruesome headlines have shown
in the last few days. Five Czechs died under an avalanche high on a
mountainside in Kyrgyzstan, while another Czech was killed after a
ten-meter fall in the Slovak High Tatras. In a bleak statistic he became
the tenth Czech fatality in the Tatras since the beginning of the year.
