Slavia Prague - Hame Zlin, photo: CTK Prague's new state-of-the-art ice hockey arena saw its first game on Sunday, when Slavia Prague took on Hame Zlin in the third game of the Extraliga playoff finals. In the NHL, Patrik Elias was the Czech player with the most points in the regular season. In football news, Sparta Prague have played their first game under new coach, and former Sparta star, Frantisek Straka. Elsewhere, Ostrava slipped up at Zlin while Olomouc have gone second, at least for a short time.  More

Jiri Kotrba, photo: CTK Sparta Prague have sacked their fourth manager in two years, Jiri Kotrba. The Czech football league champions are ten points behind leaders Ostrava, with only seven games to go. In ice hockey, defending champions Slavia Prague have made a remarkable comeback in the Extraliga semi-finals. Further afield, Czech star Petr Nedved has scored his 300th NHL goal, and against a Czech goalie to boot. In tennis, Jiri Novak has been beaten in the third round of the big-money Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami.  More

Meanwhile, Sparta manager Kotra is under pressure as a crucial derby against Slavia approaches. In the ice hockey Extraliga the quarter-finals are close to being decided, while NHL star Petr Nedved has scored his first goal for new club Edmonton. And young Czech tennis player Iveta Benesova has been enjoying her first ever WTA tournament win.  More

Teplice - Celtic, photo: CTK Teplice beat last year's finalists Celtic in the UEFA Cup on Wednesday night, but still went down 3:1 on aggregate; both club's managers give their verdict on the game. In the Czech football league, Liberec's Dosek scored a hat-trick against Zlin, while Ostrava have extended their lead at the top of the table. Pardubice are looking good in the ice hockey Extraliga playoffs and Czech star Petr Nedved has left the New York Rangers after six years at the club.  More

Czech football league leaders Banik Ostrava have been beaten by bottom of the table Blsany, while defending champions Sparta slipped up at Ceske Budejovice, allowing a resurgent Slavia to go second. Milan Baros has returned from injury in style with a goal in his first league game, while his Czech international team-mate Tomas Rosicky is out with a broken arm. In ice hockey, Pilsen whupped Kladno to take the last place in the playoffs and Czech star Robert Lang has gotten off to a great start at new club Detroit.  More

Jaromir Jagr, meanwhile, has topped a table of the highest earning hockey players of all time. As the Czech football season resumes, international coach Brueckner will be missing several key players in a friendly against Italy next week. Young high-jumper Jaroslav Baba is in fine form, though in the biathlon Katerina Holubcova has had quite a comedown after becoming world champion last year.  More

Heraldry of Kladno town I've come today to the industrial town of Kladno, around 25 kilometres west of Prague. The first recorded mention of Kladno comes from the middle of the 14th century when it was a village owned by the Kladensky family. Centuries later it was bought by the Benedictine monks from the Brevnov monastery, who were its owners until 1848.  More

Another Czech sporting great, ice hockey forward Jaromir Jagr, played his 1,000th NHL game on Friday, though the game could have gone better for the famous no. 68. In football, Jiri Stajner has joined Sparta Prague on loan from Hanover, while other Czech players had mixed fortunes as the Bundesliga started again.  More
